The Choral Society started in 1948, and currently has over 50 members.

We have two concerts each year, and rehearse on Wednesday evenings between September and April.

Bridge of Weir Choral Society invites applications for the post of Music Director.

The Bridge of Weir Choral Society is, a long-established SATB choir of around 50 members, drawn mainly from Inverclyde and Renfrewshire. Members have a range of choral experience and no audition is required to join. At present rehearsals take place in Kilmacolm on Wednesday evenings from 19.00 - 21.00 with a professional accompanist.

The season runs from September to April. A concert is held at Christmas (predominantly carols and short pieces) and a more ambitious choral work is performed in April. Recently the choir has performed music by Fauré, Mozart, Haydn, Vivaldi, Rutter and Shearing supported by professional soloists and accompanists where required.

We invite applications from musicians with a strong interest in community music making to lead and enthuse choir members.

Salary negotiable commensurate with experience.

Applicants should provide a full CV and personal statement explaining why they are interested in the position and what they would bring to the role.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an audition on 5th November. Music for the audition will be chosen by the choir committee and provided in advance.

Terms in brief

  • The MD will be self-employed and will be responsible for his/ her income tax and NI
  • The contract will be for 1 year on a probationary basis and with potential for renewal each year if both parties are in agreement.
  • We currently pay an annual fee to cover rehearsals (including a rehearsal on the concert day) + the concert, input to committee and attendance at AGM
  • Payment for any additional activities out with the normal schedule to be discussed and agreed.

The above terms are not exhaustive as full details will be agreed upon and set out in a contract at the time of appointment.

Music Director: JOB DESCRIPTION

To provide professional leadership to Bridge of Weir Choral Society maintaining and improving upon the standard of choral singing achieved. To guide and inspire members in all aspects of singing and music knowledge as related to the works being rehearsed and performed.

Specific responsibilities

  1. The director of music will lead rehearsals and conduct the choir in two concerts per year. These are normally held at Christmas time and in the Spring.
  2. Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings and concerts are usually held on Saturday or Sunday evenings. An extra rehearsal is normally held on the afternoon of the concert itself.
  3. In the event of the director of music being unable to attend a rehearsal he/she will have the responsibility of finding a substitute who can temporarily fulfil this function.
  4. In the event of the accompanist being unable to attend a rehearsal, the director of music will have the responsibility of finding a substitute who can temporarily fulfil this function.
  5. The director of music will, in discussion with the committee, be responsible for the choice of music to be performed and the programming of the concerts.
  6. The director of music will assist the committee in sourcing the music to be performed.
  7. The director of music will be responsible for finding, and recommending to the committee, soloists (where required) and accompanists for the concerts.
  8. The director of music will be responsible for compiling programme notes for the concert programmes & for liaising with other groups who may be performing.
  9. To attend committee meetings when invited (up to 4 times per year).
  10. To attend and report to the Annual General Meeting in September of each year.
  11. To support and help develop opportunities for improving the choir’s performance and events to promote membership as agreed.
